This course surveys the history of the medium
of photography from its inception in the 1820s to the present day. It focuses
on photography in the wider social context. Issues of photographic truth,
ethics, the divide between the informational content and claims of artistic
status of photographs, and the professional status of photographers shall be
examined in connection to the technical innovations in the medium and the
ethical and legal capacity to reproduce and disseminate photographs. You may
tune in to any or all of the course offerings. Dr. Lewis has taught this course
at the University level.
